Environmental Planning and Traditional Land Use Assessment

Environmental Planning and Traditional Land Use Assessment

HEG offers its clients extensive experience in managing environmental impact assessments and approvals in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA), provincial environmental legislation and international best practices. This experience spans a range of projects including small Environmental Screenings, Model Class Screenings, Comprehensive Studies, and multi-million dollar EIAs.  Our team has provided environmental planning services related to a variety of natural resource sectors including: mining, oil and gas, electrical energy generation and transmission, tourism, parks and protected areas management.

HEG has experience managing traditional and cultural land use studies and Traditional Knowledge (TK) projects with Aboriginal groups in Alberta, B.C. and the Northwest Territories.  HEG has worked with communities to successfully design and implement traditional land use studies, environmental and social monitoring programs, and to integrate TK into environmental and social impact assessments.  Our specialists have worked with communities to document historical and current relationships to natural resources and the connections between Aboriginal traditional use of resources, and Aboriginal culture and community health. We use participatory research methodologies to both scope and carry out projects, and to make management recommendations.
